My general interests lie in understanding the organizing principles of biological systems, namely at the cell and subcellular levels. For my PhD I am studying centrosome amplification in cancer with the lab of Mónica Bettancourt-Dias. The centrosome is a central player in cell division, promoting proper chromosome segregation through organization of the mitotic spindle. In cancer, they are often found in abnormally high numbers, a condition which is known to cause aneuploidy. My goal is to understand the evolution of centrosome numbers in cancer progression and their exact contribution to chromosome missegregation and genomic instability.
